Some Thoughts on Rebound / Ball Bearing Test - Anvils

Jul 17, 2018· So my point is, I could not determine the fine difference in rebound until I did the ball bearing test. I think it''s definitely worth it to do the ball bearing test before purchasing an anvil. I realized I didn''t have the ability to determine an 80% rebound vs. a 90% or even a 70% with just the hammer alone.

Jan 22, 2021· The face looks like it would clean up nicely. If you are buying this in person I’d check the rebound with a 1.5” steel ball bearing. Great anvils will be in the 90% rebound range a piece of 1” mild steel plate may rebound 10-20%. If it will rebound 40% or more I’d offer $1 per pound possibly a little more.

Why You Should Invest In An American Made Anvil Brand

The anvil should have clean edges that are very crisp. Always check the hardness of an anvil with a bounce test. Certain materials require a specific hardness, so if you buy a soft anvil, it will just be a waste of money. Dropping a ball bearing and calculating the bounce back will let you know how hard your anvil is.

Help with identifying an anvil I found - Tools and

Apr 27, 2017· Just looked it up in Anvils in America, and they made 10 and 25 pound anvils from cast ductile iron, larger ones in steel. Definitely do the ball bearing test, or at a minimum take a small hammer and let it drop gently on the face. If it goes thunk instead of ringing or you don''t get a good bounce, walk away.
